Witch’s Cauldron Cupcakes

Witch's Cauldron Cupcakes

Cupcakes? Good. Halloween? Good. Halloween cupcakes filled with a creamy center and topped with buttercream? GREAT!

These witch’s cauldron cupcakes are super chocolaty, creamy, and delicious! They’re perfect for this festive season and any Halloween party you decide to attend. What’s even better is that they’re not expensive to make and you can make the filling and frosting while the cake is baking!  Since we’re all about honesty and transparency here, the vanilla filling and buttercream recipes are not my own. The filling is from Des and Kadee over on Oh So Delicioso and the buttercream is from Jamie over on Love Bakes Good Cakes. Make sure you go over to their sites and show them some love! Alright, let’s just get into it, shall we?

Bake your cupcakes.

Ok, I’m going to assume you’ve baked a cake from a box mix before, so I’m not going to go into great detail here. Preheat your oven, mix your ingredients, fill your pans and bake. Easy peasy, just read the back of the box and do what it says! I opted to use a box mix because, well, I’m lazy and they taste good. If you feel like making your cake from scratch, go for it!

Make your cream filling.

When I first decided to attempt a cream filling, I thought it was going to be super tricky, and I thought I was crazy. Honestly, guys, this was so easy! All it takes is three ingredients and three to five minutes! I used my beloved Kitchenaid stand mixer, so if you’re mixing this by hand, it could take a lot longer.

All you do is mix the cream and sugar, on high, until it starts to thicken. Then you slowly add the pudding mix and food colouring. The amount of colouring will depend on how vibrant you want your filling to be. Once it is done, just put it in a bowl and keep it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it.

Make your buttercream

If you think making the filling was easy, wait until you make this buttercream! In a clean mixer, mix all of your ingredients together. Once it’s smooth, divide it into two bowls. One will be for purple frosting and the other for black. You could always just do one colour too to make things easier for yourself!

Assemble your cupcakes

For this step, you’ll need to make sure that your cupcakes are nice and cooled. You wouldn’t want your filling and frosting to melt! Take a sharp knife and cut a small hole in the center of your cupcake, keeping the scraps. Spoon, or pipe, your cream filling into it, making sure you don’t overfill. Place a piece of the scrap cake on top to seal it shut. Filling done!

Scoop your frosting into a piping bag or ziplock and pipe it on top of your cupcakes. If you chose to do two colours as I did, spoon each colour into a piping bag; purple on one side and black on the other. Once you start piping, you’ll see it makes a swirl pattern! You might need to practice a little bit, but it’s not a difficult as it sounds.
