Hey everyone! How are you doing? This is quite the crazy time we’re having, huh? I know this whole lockdown scenario can be scary and social distancing can be hard. Just take it one day at a time.
Side note: If you’re reading this 50 years into the future and have no idea what I’m talking about, in 2020 we had this thing called a “Global Pandemic”. Tons of people got sick and died, so we weren’t really supposed to leave our houses for what seemed like an eternity. It was a crazy time I tell ya!
Anyway, yeah, boredom right? If you’re reading this it probably means you feel like you’ve run out of things to do. Well, you’ve come to the right place! I’ve made a whole list of things to do to keep busy. Ready? Let’s go.
Things to do when you’re bored at home
Tidy and organize
Shocker that this made it onto the list, right? I feel like everyone’s first answer to boredom is to clean your home. They’re not crazy though and there’s a reason this is number one on my list. A clean home will help you relax and enjoy the rest of the things I’ve put onto the list. Don’t know where to get started? I’ve written a whole post on spring cleaning that will help you out! Click here to read that.
Make lists
Oh, I love making lists! I bet you’re wondering why this is on THIS list though. Because you can literally make a list about anything. Lists can be practical or just for fun. Practical lists include to-do lists, grocery lists, etc. Fun lists include your top 10 favourite books, places you want to go, or a list of things you’re going to do after reading this blog post. Whatever you want!
Meditate
Feeling anxious? I feel ya, I really do. I suggest a good meditation session. Put some pillows on the floor, light a candle, and pop on some miracle tones on youtube. If you’re more of a guided meditation kind of person, I highly recommend the Calm app. Also, if that doesn’t help your anxiety I have a post that may help you. Click here to read that!
Video chat with friends
This is a great option for when you can’t actually go see people! Use facetime, google hangouts, or zoom (although it’s quite controversial).
Movie/TV marathon
Most people would call this “binge-watching” but I prefer to call it a marathon. I feel like it sounds more positive. One thing I like to do is have a theme for my marathons. Feeling like you need to laugh? Comedy marathon! Feeling like you need some adventure? Action or thriller marathon! Here are my top 5 marathon worthy picks:
- Harry Potter
- How To Get Away With Murder
- Gossip Girl
- Pretty Little Liars
- Anything on Bravo
Read
If you’re not into movies or TV, how about books? Books can be a great way to escape reality for a little while. If you’re a self-help book kind of person, I wrote a post about my top ten books! Go give that a read if you’re interested. Would you prefer someone to read to you? I just tried Audible and man, that’s nice haha. If it’s something you’d like to try free for 30 days, click here!
Do a puzzle
Who doesn’t love a puzzle? Jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, sudoku puzzles, there’s so many to choose from!
Cook or bake something
Do you have a recipe you’ve been dying to try? Give it a shot now! Cooking/baking can be relaxing and eating is, well, eating is the best part. This is a scary time, eat the cookie! Speaking of cookies, I have a great recipe if you want to try them. Click here to make those! If cookies aren’t your thing, maybe one of these recipes will interest you!
Be creative
Creativity is a great way to beat boredom! There are literally SO many ways to be creative but here’s a list of things I think could be fun:
- Do some drawing
- Make something out of items you’d usually throw away
- Repurpose an old t-shirt
- Paint a picture
- Make some friendship bracelets to send to your friends.
- Write a letter to someone
- Create a scrapbook
- Design some graphics online ( I love Canva and Pickmonkey)
- Make the most epic paper airplane
- Create a vision board
- Create a cozy blanket fort!
Do some yardwork
Do you have an outdoor space that needs some tending to? Mow your lawn, plant some flowers, pick those weeds! If the weather is nice, spending time outdoors will lift your spirits. If you don’t have a yard, I suggest opening your windows or sitting on your patio/ balcony if you have one.
Feel your feelings
Listen, life can be busy and I feel like we’re all getting really good at pushing our feelings away. Now is a good time to unpack those feelings and deal with them head-on. I know this sounds scary, so if you have a lot of issues you need to work on, I suggest unpacking them one at a time.
If you find that you need help with this part, as do I, take a look at Betterhelp. I use them and I have only amazing things to say. If you’re interested or want more information, I have an affiliate link here. This link will not add to your price, don’t worry I’d never do that to you. Instead, we’ll both be getting a week for free, no pressure though. Sound good?
Journal
This kind of goes with the section about being creative and feeling your feelings. Journaling can help unpack some emotional baggage as well as be a creative outlet to do so. It’s amazing how much better you can feel after a good and healthy venting session!
Go on social media
Ok, scrolling is mindless and apparently bad for our mental health, so that’s not what I’m telling you to do. What I’m suggesting is for you to go on social media and do something unheard of these days; spread love. Social media can be a cold-hearted place, so if you’re bored and looking for something to do, go say some nice things to people online. Make someone’s day!
Play some video games
I don’t care how old you are, video games have, and always will be fun. My game of choice? The Sims. Hands down the best game ever. The best part? It’s downloadable now so you don’t have to actually go out and get it. Honestly, I don’t really care what game you play as long as it’s fun for you. If you’re looking to sample some games, go to Big Fish Games. They let you try every game for FREE for an hour. I can’t even begin to tell you how many hours I’ve spent playing games on here haha.
Put some cute outfits together
“But Jordan, I don’t have anywhere to go.” I know, but eventually, you will. Also, why not get dressed to make yourself feel better? Do I sense a photoshoot opportunity? Try to make a new outfit out of clothes you hardly wear anymore. It’s like shopping, but without spending any money! Is your wardrobe messy? I can help. I have a blog post all about how to declutter and organize your wardrobe like a boss. Click here to read that bad boy!
Get active
Ok, I feel like everyone talks about this but people, GET THOSE ENDORPHINS GOING! I’m not telling you to run a mile or to star lifting weights, I’m just telling you to move your body. Move your body by:
- Walking around the block
- Dace around your home
- Try some yoga
- Try an at-home workout
- Stretch
- Clean your room (yes this counts and it’s killing two birds with one stone)
- Practice your fiercest runway walk
- Practice your action movie fight scene
I don’t care what you do, just move your body! Brownie points if you get creative with it though. Let’s be honest, dancing and fight scenes are way more fun than running. Am I right?
Start that business
I’m not going to be one of those people who say
“If you don’t start your (insert business venture/side-hustle here) right now, you’re wasting time.”
I think its pushy, insensitive, and tone-deaf. However, I will say that if you’re bored and passionate about a dream you have, this is a good time to get started on it. Any little step is a step in the right direction! So if money is tight, come up with a plan of action. Get an idea of what you want your business is. What will your brand be? What does your branding look like? Who is your target audience? How do you get the money to start? These are all very important questions and also free to think about and get started on.
Pamper yourself
Yes, yes, yes! Pamper nights are my favourite kind of nights. I LIVE for them. If you’re looking for a good way to pamper yourself here are some ideas:
- Take a nice hot bath
- Light some candles and put on some soothing music
- Facial steams
- Make yourself a delicious treat to snack on
- Put on a hydrating face mask
- Put on a hair mask
- Paint your nails
- Dye your hair
- Put on your favourite pj’s and watch your favourite movie
There are so many ways to pamper yourself. Whatever feels good to you, do it!
Relax
Just relax. We’re ina difficult time right now and our new normal is scary. Don’t put pressure on yourself to do anything. If you need some time to do nothing, I want you to do absolutely nothing. If doing nothing helps you feel better, then doing nothing is something.
I hope this post helps you cure your boredom! Let me know what you think in the comments below. Is there something on this list you think I left out? How do you deal with boredom? Let’s chat!
