Benefits of having a neutral wardrobe

The fashion industry is full of colors, patterns, textures, and prints. It’s fun and constantly changing. Your personal style is the perfect way to express yourself. What about neutral wardrobes though? In a world of color, neutral can sound boring and underwhelming. That’s why I’m here to tell you the benefits of having a neutral wardrobe!

What is a neutral wardrobe?

Neutral clothing is anything in black, white, grey, tan, and earth tones. In my opinion, dark and earthy greens and denim count too. Neutral clothing is most often associated with staple pieces or items that set a solid foundation for the rest of your clothing; such as accessories or statement pieces.  Other names for a neutral wardrobe include basic (although I don’t like this one because it makes it sound boring), classic, or minimalist. So now that you know what a neutral wardrobe is, let’s get into the benefits of having one!

Reasons to have a neutral wardrobe

Neutrals are classic

There is no debate that a neutral look is a classic look. Think about it; Marlin Monroe’s white dress, James Dean’s white T-shirt, a Burberry trench coat, Posh Spice’s “little black Gucci dress”! All very classic items and all very neutral.

It’s easy to get dressed

Honestly, this is one of the biggest benefits of a neutral wardrobe. Getting dressed is so much easier because everything goes together! Even if you’re wearing a pop of color, chances are that it won’t clash with the other pieces you have on.

You buy less

If you’re wearing neutrals, chances are that you’re investing in some key staple pieces like jeans, jackets, dresses, etc. Because you’re spending more, you’re getting more use out of them. You’re not constantly trying to keep up with color trends and wasting money on pieces you’ll only wear this season. BONUS: Buying less is better for the environment!

Ok, but on the other hand, you might buy a lot of clothing items, but that’s because you can spend less money on them. Neutral items are usually considered to be basic pieces. Basic pieces can be found for amazing prices! You can get a white T-shirt at H&M for under $5.00! What a steal!

You get more wear out of them

If you are buying better-quality pieces, you’re able to get a lot more wear out of them! You can also wear the same pieces over again and no one will notice. Think about it, no one will notice if you wear the same black shirt twice this week. A bold red one? Yeah, people will know.

Great for all seasons

Have you ever heard of seasonal colors? Well, neutrals are always in! Sure, you have some people who believe “you shouldn’t wear white after labor day.” but what do they know? It snows after labor day and the snow is white. If the environment can wear white, so can you!

You can still stand out in a crowd

I get it, sometimes colors can help you stand out in a crowd. I believe they call this peacocking. Well, what if I told you that you could do this in neutral clothing too? It’s all about fit and shape! Remember Bjork’s swan dress at the 2001 Academy Awards? That was definitely a head-turner! Neutral, yet exciting!

More wiggle room for fun hair

This is obviously one of my favorite reasons to wear neutral colors. I love dying my hair with fun colors! If you’re a huge lover of color this may not bother you, but I can’t stand the feeling of having pink hair and wearing something bright. It makes me feel like a walking highlighter. Wearing neutral colors helps make my hair the star of the show, you know?

How to keep a neutral wardrobe fun

I think a lot of people assume a neutral outfit is boring, but in my humble opinion, they’re wrong! Here are ways to make a neutral outfit shine!

Staples in neutrals with pops of color

Adding pops of color is my favorite. It’s usually my hair, but I love a good statement shoe or jacket in a fun color.

Play with texture

Textures are key to making a neutral outfit more interesting. Play with different fabrics like faux fur, lace, faux leather, embroidery, or knits.

Play with pattern

Patterns can be neutral too! Play with stripes, polka dots, or my favorite, animal prints.

Play with silhouettes

The shape of your clothing can make a huge statement. Try wearing an oversized top with tight bottoms or a tight top with flowy bottoms. Wear a form-fitting outfit with a boxy jacket on top. Add pieces with volume, like ruffles.

Statement pieces

Just because your wardrobe is primarily neutral, it doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to have color! I LOVE a good statement piece. One of my favorite pieces is this pink corduroy jumpsuit. Do I wear it all the time? No, but I feel amazing in it when I do. The key to buying statement pieces is to make sure you absolutely love them and feel great in them!

Add accessories

Jazz up any neutral outfit with some jewelry! You can keep it dainty or go all out on a statement necklace or pair of earrings. Hats, bags, and shoes can really take a styled look to the next level too!
